Hybrid propulsion is not a new technology but its application to a transfer module or to a re-ignitable upper stage is very innovative. It provides an interesting alternative for transfer to a Geostationary orbit (GEO), lying between chemical propulsion (bi-liquid) and electrical propulsion.

Novaspace analysed the market for propulsion to demonstrate demand for a hybrid propulsion apogee engine. As part of this analysis, Novaspace evaluated and defined the competitive positioning of HYPROGEO and developed an associated exploitation plan and development roadmap.
